A green line through the western corridor
The Grumeti River runs west through the western corridor of Serengeti National Park towards Lake Victoria, carrying a belt of gallery forest with it. In a park defined by open plains, that ribbon of tall riverine trees is a completely different habitat, and it is the reason the western corridor holds animals the rest of the park does not.
TANAPA records black-and-white colobus and red patas monkeys in the western corridor specifically — primates most visitors do not expect in the Serengeti at all. The primate watching guide covers where else they occur. The river’s deep pools hold very large Nile crocodiles, and hippo are resident along it.
The crossings, and how they differ from the Mara’s
The Great Migration crosses the Grumeti on its way north, usually earlier in the year than the Mara crossings. The character of it is different, and this is the point most itineraries elide.
The Grumeti is crossed in a scattered, piecemeal way along a considerable length of river rather than at one or two concentrated points. The dramatic set-piece crossing of the photographs — thousands of animals funnelling into a single bank — is a Mara phenomenon far more than a Grumeti one. Anyone booking the western corridor expecting the same spectacle should adjust expectations downward, and anyone who wants a quieter, less vehicle-heavy version of the same phenomenon should adjust them up.
The ground around it
The corridor is narrower and greener than the rest of the park, and the river is its spine. Resident topi and giraffe are characteristic here. TANAPA’s airstrip at Kirawira serves this part of the park and there are cottages at Kirawira; the gates are Handajega and, at the far western end, Ndabaka, where the park keeps a public campsite that TANAPA says needs no booking.
North of the river the park adjoins Grumeti Game Reserve and Ikorongo Game Reserve, both named by TANAPA as part of the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. A short distance north of the river stands Fort Ikoma, a German fort built at the end of the 1890s on a low hill — a reminder that this part of the Serengeti has a colonial-era history as well as a wildlife one.
What is not published
No Tanzanian authority publishes a length, a catchment area, a flow regime or a seasonal description for the Grumeti, and none names individual crossing points on it. Figures for all of those circulate in travel writing; none of them has a source behind it that this site could stand on. What is published is the river’s position in the ecosystem and the fact that the corridor carries it.

When does the migration cross the Grumeti?
Generally on the northward leg, earlier in the year than the Mara crossings, but with the same caveat: the timing moves between years and cannot be booked.
Are Grumeti crossings like Mara crossings?
Usually not. The Grumeti is crossed in a dispersed way along a long stretch of river rather than at concentrated points, so the mass-crossing spectacle is much less likely here.
Is the Grumeti River the same as Grumeti Game Reserve?
No. The river runs through the national park’s western corridor. Grumeti Game Reserve is a separate protected area on the park’s northern flank, under different management, and has its own page.
