Where Pongwe is
Pongwe is a small, sheltered bay on the east coast of Unguja, between Kiwengwa to the north and Uroa to the south. It is a short stretch of shore with a handful of small properties on it and very little else, and it has one genuine physical advantage over the beaches either side of it.
The reef sits close in
Almost everywhere on Unguja’s east coast, the reef lies a long way offshore and a wide flat drains between it and the beach at low water. At Pongwe the reef sits much closer to the shore, and the flat in front of it is correspondingly narrower.
The consequence is that the tide withdraws less here than it does further south. This is not the northern tip — swimming is still easier at high water than at low, and Zanzibar’s tidal range still runs from close to a metre at neaps to over three metres at springs — but the sea does not disappear across several hundred metres of flat the way it does at Jambiani or Paje.
For anyone who wants an east-coast beach without the full east-coast drainage, that is the reason Pongwe exists as a destination at all. If swimming at any state of the tide is genuinely non-negotiable, the northern tip at Nungwi and Kendwa is still the only reliable answer. The beach holidays guide covers the whole coast.
The close reef also means more protection from swell and a calmer bay generally, and it puts snorkellable water within a short distance of the beach rather than a boat ride away.
What there is
Not much, which is the appeal. Pongwe is quiet, small and thinly developed, and there is little to do on the beach beyond being on it.
Snorkelling is the obvious activity given the reef’s position. Sea kayaking works in the sheltered bay. Sandbank trips and diving both run from this coast, generally with a transfer north or south. There is wind here and essentially no kitesurfing infrastructure, so it is independent-rider water rather than a place to learn.

Practical notes

Is Pongwe better for swimming than the rest of the east coast?
Somewhat. The reef sits closer in and the flat is narrower, so the sea withdraws less at low water than it does further south. It is still an east-coast beach and still easier at high water, but it is the gentler end of the pattern.
Is there anything to do at Pongwe?
Very little on the beach itself, which is why people choose it. Snorkelling is good because of the reef’s position, kayaking works in the sheltered bay, and everything else involves a transfer along the coast.
How does Pongwe compare with Kiwengwa?
